Dairy Cattle Artificial Insemination (11:067:322)

Experiential Learning Course (1 credit, Pass/No Credit)

Typically Offered

Each Spring semester as a 3-day course (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) during the week of Spring break.

Prerequisites & Other Registration Restrictions

Pre-requisites are Animal Science (11:067:142) and Animal Reproduction (11:067:327). Having had experience with large animals, e.g. Animal Practicum sections CA or HO is helpful. Registration is by special permission through Dr. Westendorf (Bartlett 213F, 732-932-9408; michael.westendorf@rutgers.edu)

Format

Techniques of artificial insemination are taught using classroom instruction and "hands-on" with dairy cattle in eastern PA (Doylestown, Skippak, Manheim).

Description

Students receive training in dairy cattle anatomy and physiology, semen storage and management and artificial insemination technique. Precision Diagnostics personnel, assisted by Dr. Westendorf, teach the course.

Examinations

Grading is based on a written test and success in "hands-on" insertion of an AI rod and proper semen deposition. Students successfully completing the course receive a grade from Rutgers and certification from Precision Diagnostics.

Other Requirements

Precision Diagnostics charges a fee covering training materials and equipment. Costs for lodging, transportation, meals, etc. are also the responsibility of the student.
