Mission & Learning Goals

Mission

The mission of the program is to educate students in Animal Sciences through intensive coursework and participation in research and/or hands-on experience with animals. The overarching goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in professional schools, graduate school, or employment in our discipline.

Learning Goals

In pursuit of this mission, Animal Science graduates will have achieved the following Program Learning Goals.

Students will:

1. Gain broad knowledge of the Animal Science discipline to understand the future of the field and its diversity.
2. Apply biological and chemical principles and quantitative reasoning to concepts presented in core subject areas in Animal Science such as physiology, nutrition, genetics, and reproduction.
3. Develop an in-depth understanding of option-specific subject areas such as preveterinary medicine, animal production, equine science, companion animal science, and lab animal science.
4. Acquire skills for handling and caring for laboratory animals and livestock species.
5. Develop critical thinking skills to identify scientific questions and devise solutions including, designing experiments, analyzing and interpreting research data, and summarizing findings.
6. Develop oral and written communication skills to effectively deliver scientific and technical information to scientists as well as the public.
7. Develop an understanding of the principles of animal welfare and ethical treatment of animals.
