Laboratory Animal Science: Management and Techniques (11:067:275)

Each Fall and Spring semesters as an evening course.

Prerequisites & Other Registration Restrictions

Enrollment is limited (stop point=30) and the course required of students completing the Laboratory Animal Science option.

Format

Lecture and Laboratory. Class meets twice per week for an 80-minute lecture. Some weeks a laboratory that may run 3 hours replaces the lecture. Students attend only one lab on those weeks that are scheduled for the hands-on laboratory exercise.

Description

A lecture- and laboratory-based course required for majors in lab animal science option. The course introduces students to the principles and practices of laboratory animal science with an emphasis on animal care and the biology of traditional laboratory animals. It includes hands-on experience with routine research methods with rodents. Course topics include: An Overview of Research Using Animals, Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare, Regulations and Laws, Anatomy and Physiology, Health, Nutrition and Disease, Animal Housing and Facility Design, Animal Handling, Pharmacology and Surgery, Transgenic Animals and Genotyping.

Examinations

Two hourly exams in the lecture period, and a laboratory practical exam during the final exam week, and unannounced quizzes throughout the semester.
