The equine specialist in the department provided national leadership for the preparation of the Horse Industry Handbook (the only multi-authored, peer-reviewed text on horse management). Dairy cattle, other ruminants, swine, poultry, and exotic animals reflect the diversity of the challenge for the other full-time extension specialist. "Efforts that were initiated to provide information on the bovine somatotropin (bST) issue are commendable" (CSRS-USDA, 1994). In coordination with the State Department of Agriculture, a program on Johne's disease, which affects dairy cattle and milk production, has received widespread attention and praise. Research and education programs in food waste recycling have also been developed.
