Research

My overall research interests focus on endocrine regulation of normal mammary gland physiology and breast tumorigenesis. In the Cohick laboratory my studies are aimed at elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) regulate growth, differentiation, and apoptosis in mammary epithelial cells. Recent studies focus on an IGF-independent role of IGFBP-3 in stress-induced apoptosis. Additionally, we are studying how in utero alcohol exposure affects mammary tumorigenesis later in life using an in vivo transgenic mouse model in conjunction with gene expression analysis, 3D cell culture, and flow cytometry.
