My primary research interest is in the field of epigenetics and its regulatory mechanism of gene expression in cancer and neurobiology. Epigenetic modifications play an important role in regulating gene expression comprises DNA methylation, covalent histone modification and noncoding RNAs. My current research focuses on how fetal alcohol exposure epigenetically programs the hypothalamus to regulate stress axis. Dissecting the global promoter DNA methylation and identifying various noncoding RNAs which play a key role in the gene regulation would advance our understanding of studying fetal alcohol exposure induced stress a critical factor in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) patients. My studies also focused on identifying various histone code modifications recruited at gene promoters which alter chromatin architecture in fetal alcohol exposure induced pituitary tumor cells. The study may provide a relevant mechanism to understand alcohol induced sensitivity to prolactin secreting pituitary tumors. My career objective is primarily to understand the role of epigenetic mechanisms that control central nervous system and neuroendocrine functions.
My current research studies include:
- Fetal alcohol exposure alters hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis function via regulating POMC gene expression through an epigenetic mechanism.
- Fetal alcohol exposure epigenetically programs the pituitary to increase tumor susceptibility in rat offspring.
